Import Word, Markdown or LaTeX

If the work is already written, import it. You do not need to retype anything.

File Notes
Word (.docx) Headings, text, tables, figures and the reference list.
Markdown (.md) Headings, lists, tables, images and formulas.
LaTeX (.tex) One file with the text.
LaTeX project (.zip) The whole project, for example a zip downloaded from Overleaf, with its figures and its bibliography file.
  1. Open your submission in the editor.

  2. Press Import in the toolbar and choose the file.

  3. Read what the import found.

If the file begins with a title, authors, an abstract and keywords, you are offered to put them into their fields. Nothing you already typed in a field is replaced without your agreement.

  4. Check the result against your original, then go on writing.

For a small example of each kind of file, and how to prepare a Word file, see The editor: worked examples.

A paper written in Markdown does not have to be saved as a file first. Copy the text and paste it into an empty paper, and it is read in the same way as a .md file. The guide has a complete paper to copy if you want to try it.

In a paper that already has text, pasted Markdown stays plain text, so nothing is replaced. Use the import button there, which asks first.

  • Figures are in place and each has its caption.
  • Tables kept their rows and columns.
  • Equations are drawn properly.
  • References moved into the References panel. Any that could not be read stay at the end of the text with a note beside them.
  • Headings are in the right order.

Quorum Press reads the paper, not the typesetting. From a LaTeX project it brings in:

From your project What you get
Sections, paragraphs, lists, footnotes The same, as text you can edit.
Formulas: equation, align, gather, multline, cases, IEEEeqnarray and the like Formulas, with your own macros worked out.
Tables: tabular, tabularx, longtable, with multicolumn, multirow and booktabs rules Tables. Column widths, colours and rotation are left out.
Figures in PNG, JPG and PDF Pictures. A PDF figure is drawn as a picture.
Citations and a .bib file, a thebibliography list, or the .bbl file The reference list in the References panel, with citations numbered.
Algorithms Their steps, as lines of text.
The IEEE, Elsevier and Springer paper classes Read as an ordinary paper. The class’s page layout is not kept.

Some things cannot come in and are marked where they were:

  • Drawings made in code (TikZ, PGFPlots, circuit diagrams). Save each as a PNG or PDF and add it with Figure.
  • EPS figures. Save them as PNG or PDF.

A project that compiles on your computer (MiKTeX, TeX Live, MacTeX) imports the same way as one from Overleaf:

  1. Put the main .tex file, the other .tex files it brings in, the figures, and the .bib or .bbl file in one folder.
  2. Zip the folder as an ordinary .zip, with no password.
  3. Import the .zip.

File names may differ in upper and lower case from how the paper names them, and paths may use backslashes. Both are understood.

A paper that compiles on Overleaf, MiKTeX, TeX Live or MacTeX should import. LaTeX lets many small things pass with only a warning, such as a brace opened and never closed, and so does the import. When it has made such an allowance it tells you, so you can read that part through.

If one passage cannot be read at all, it is left out and marked in the text, and everything else comes in. Look for the mark and add that passage by hand.

If our reader cannot follow the LaTeX at all, the import still brings in the text, the headings and the formulas, and tells you that the tables, figures and reference list are missing. That is a limit of Quorum Press, not a fault in your paper. Please send the .zip to Support, with the tracking code, so we can make it work. Importing the paper as .docx is another way in.
